Also called dermolipectomy, it is the removal of adipose tissue or skin from the abdomen. This surgery aims at reshaping the abdomen by removing accumulated fat under the navel, and by adjusting the muscular belt that is loose due to weight cycling, pregnancy, or aging.
This surgery may be associated with liposuction when there is excess fat accumulated as well as excess skin.
The recommended anesthesia is usually general, or epidural in some cases. The procedure can last from 90 minutes to 3 hours. The duration is increased when the procedure is associated with liposuction.
Results can be seen immediately after surgery, says plastic surgeon Guilherme Graziosi M.D., who also highlights the importance of wearing an elastic girdle associated with lymphatic drainage for three months after the procedure to improve posture and contain the post-surgical edema.
